The Guillotine 2000 Academic All-State Wrestlers

Two-time State Champion, Derek Johnson of Owatonna High School, boasts a varsity career record of 123-10 with another year to go. Derek, coached by Scot Davis, is a three-time section champ and had a 40-4 record this season. He has a 3.83 GPA and made the 2000 MWCA Academic All-State Team. Doyle and Sue Ann Johnson are his parents. Attending college and wrestling figure highly in his future plans.

Jordan Holm, four-time section champ and two-time State champ was a member of the 2000 Minnesota Dream Team, wrestling at 189 pounds. A Northfield High School senior, Jordan placed 5th at the NCHSA Championships and has a 129-29 varsity career record. He is a National Honor Society member with a 3.86 GPA. He's a four-time All Conference Wrestler. Jeff and Sue Holm are his parents and Mark Woitalla has been his coach. He is a Greco Cadet National Champion (1998) and placed 5th in the Jr. Greco Nationals in 1999. He plans to attend college.

Two-time Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler, Clint Hodgdon is a three-time section champ and was State runner-up this season at 171 pounds. He wrestled with the Grand Meadow-Leroy Ostrander Kingsland team and was coached by Bill Simpkins. He has earned a 3.97 GPA, made the 2000 MWCA Academic All-State Team, is a four-time Academic All-Conference and four-time All-Conference wrestler. A senior, Clint holds the school record with a 114-18 career record, 59 pins and 309 takedowns. Al and Sue Hodgdon are his proud parents.

Ty Eustice, a Blue Earth Area junior, is a three-time State champion and four-time section champ. He boasts a 146-11 career record and holds the school takedown record at 230. His season record was 37-1. Jack and Mona Eustice are his parents, Jack also being his coach. Ty's GPA is 3.7. He is a member of the 2000 MWCA Academic All-State Team at 145 pounds. With a year to go in high school, Ty plans to "wrestle at a Division I college and become an All-American."

Two-time Guillotine All-State Wrestler, Lucas Christianson graduates with a 101-19 career record and a season tally of 41-4. He wrestled in the MN/WISC All Star Classic and with the 2000 Minnesota Dream Team, and placed 6th at the 2000 High School Nationals. He is coached by Apple Valley's Jim Jackson. Lucas placed 2nd at the State Tournament in 1999 and 2000. Rod and Pat Christianson are his parents. He has a 3.85 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He earned a wrestling scholarship to NDSU where he plans to study pre-med.

Tony Nord, a Blackduck senior, is a five-time state entrant placing 2nd in 1998, 3rd in 1999 and 3rd in 2000. He has amassed a varsity record of 151-24 at weights 103, 112 and 119 throughout his wrestling career. Steve Bechtold is his coach and Carl and Sherrie Nord are his parents. Tony's GPA is 3.84. He is a National Honor Society member, two-time Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler, and a two-time MWCA Academic All-State Team member. He is All-Conference in football and is a Leadership Award Winner in FFA. He is an award winner in math and science, belongs to the Honor Choir and Honor Band, earned superior ratings in choir&endash;solo and ensemble contests. Tony's future plans include attending Wheaton College, wrestling, and majoring in Christian Ministries. "After college, I hope to become a Youth Minister."

Joachim wrestles for Osakis High School and coach Brad Hoffarth. He was runner-up at the State Tournament this year at 140 pounds, which was his second appearance. He was a four-time Prairie Conference Champ and two-time Section 7A Champ. With a 119-42 career record, he has 68 career falls and as a junior, has an opportunity to improve on that. This season's tally was 32-3. Al and Annie Wiener are the proud parents of this athlete and have guided this Honor Student to an excellent 3.9 GPA. Upon graduation, he plans to study to become a veterinarian.

State Champion Alex Serie has a season record of 34-1, and an overall career record of 121-33. He is a captain of the Luverne wrestling team, coached by Dave Duffy. He is a five-year letter winner, three-time All Conference, and a 3AA Champon his junior and senior years. A champion of a number of tournaments, he wrestled at 171 pounds. He has been cheered on by his parents, Rick and Carol Serie. He was a Student Council representative his junior year, senior class treasurer and has been selected as a commencement speaker for the Class of 2000. He has a 3.65 GPA and plans to attend St. John's University.

Section champion, Johnny Barthel had a season record of 33-3, wrestling for coach Gregg Greeno and the St.Michael Albertville team. As a senior, he holds a career record of 105-47. He was All -Wright County Conference in football and wrestling, a Minnesota/Wisconsin All-Star Classic participant, and 1st Team 2000 MWCA Academic All-State. He has a 3.8 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He wrestled at 152 pounds and was runner-up at the 2000 State Tournament. John and Barb Barthel are his parents. His plans include wrestling in college.

Three-time State Champion and four-time section champ, Josh McLay, has been a three-year team captain and six-year letter winner. A senior, coached by Paul Vaith and a member of the Hastings wrestling team, Josh has been five-time All Conference, a returning Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler and MWCA Academic All-State member. He has a career record of 180-30 and had an undefeated season with 41 wins. He wrestled on the 2000 Minnesota Dream Team wrestling at 160 pounds. He is a senior and the son of Jerry and Lisa McLay and has earned a 3.5 GPA. He will be wrestling for the University of Minnesota.

Thad Pike, Hayfield, is a five-time State entrant, placed 4th as a freshman, 3rd as a sophomore and junior, and captured the championship as a senior, wrestling at 140 pounds. His parents are Danny and Sherri Pike. Thad has a 164-27 overall record and has a perfect 36-0 record his senior year. He is a five-year letter winner, Thad was All-Conference for four years, named to the Guillotine team of the Month, and the 2000 MWCA Academic All-State Team. Thad was a team captain and is coached by Will Pazurek. He has been a member of the National Honor Society for the last three years. He plans to wrestle for NDSU and study chiropractics.

A three-time State placewinner, Kelly Flaherty, a junior, wrestling for the Big Lake wrestling team, has a season record of 36-2 and a varsity career record of 136-24. Kelly's parents are Pat and Lonnie Flaherty and he is coached by Loren Holthaus. He placed 3rd at State as a freshman, 4th as a sophomore and was runner-up to the two-time State Champion, Ty Eustice, this spring. Kelly has been voted captain for next season. His GPA is 3.65. Upon graduation he plans to attend college and continue wrestling. He has set a goal to wrestle in Division I.

135 pound Class AA State Champion Aaron Erickson of Minnewaska Area High School is a senior who attained a season record of 33-1. His varsity career record is 110-46. He was a four-time West Central Conference Champ. He wrestled for Coach Wes Tessman. His GPA is 3.45 and he's a member of the 2000 MWCA Academic All-State Team. He is the son of Bonnie Erickson. Aaron will be attending Concordia College of Moorhead or St. Cloud State University to pursue a degree in business management. He also plans to continue his wrestling.

Owatonna High School senior, Eli Ross, is a two-time State placewinner earning a 5th place in 1999 and 3rd in 2000. He was a section champ in 2000. Wrestling at heavyweight, Eli gained a 44-1 season record and a 92-20 overall record. His coach is Scot Davis and his parents are Kent and Terri Ross. In 1999 he placed 4th in the Greco Junior Nationals and 6th in the World Greco Cadet Tournament. Eli has a 3.64 GPA and plans to wrestle while attending the University of Minnesota.

Joe Bryce is a three-time West Central Conference champion, three-time State entrant and two-time State place winner. His varsity career record is 110-49 and season record is 34-1. His parents are Alan and Pat Bryce. A senior, he wrestled on the Minnewaska Area wrestling team where Wes Tessman was his coach. Joe has a 3.74 GPA and was a member of the MWCA Academic All-State Team, and a 1999 Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler Honorable Mention. He has signed a letter of intent to attend school and wrestle at NDSU.

Litchfield High School wrestler, Nate Turck is a two-time Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler. He was a three-time State entrant placing fourth in 1997, 1999 and 2000 and a two-time section champ. He had a season record of 32-3 and a career record of 165-50. A senior wrestling for coach Chip Rankin, Nate was team captain and two-year All-Conference. Nate has a nearly perfect 3.96 GPA, is a two year member of the National Honor Society, and was named to the MWCA All-State Academic Team. He is the son of Steve and Pat Turck, plans to attend college and major in pre-chiropractic.

Mike Cunningham is a two-time State entrant, this year winning the runner-up spot. He has a career record of 93-19 and a season record of 34-2. Mike is a senior and the son of Troy Cunningham. He wrestles for William Kinney and the Austin wrestling team. Paul was a two-time section champion, and a three-time All-Conference wrestler. He participated on the Minnesota Dream Team and the Minnesota/Wisconsin Classic Team. Paul is an honor roll student with a 3.6 GPA. He plans to attend a four year college and major in elementary education.

Eastview High School junior, Adam Fokken is a two-time State qualifier, and a two-year team captain. He is a four-time All-Conference and a four-time section place winner. His coach is Kurt Habeck who has helped to lead him to a 109-36 career record so far. This season's tally is 34-7. Adam has an outstanding 3.9 GPA, and his proud parents are Mark and Lois Fokken.

Travis Yamanaka, Apple Valley senior, wrestled at 145 pounds for coach Jim Jackson, and placed 4th at State. He was a section champion and voted the team's "Most Dedicated Wrestler". His season record is 34-11.He is the son of Cory and Peggy Yamanaka. He is an honor student with an stunning 3.90 GPA. Travis plans to attend the University of Illinois.

Blaine Merritt, a junior at Canby High School ,is the son of Jeff and Patti Merritt. He has a GPA of 3.88 and is coached by Perry Fink. He is a four-time section place winner, taking 1st in 1997 and 2000. He is a two-time state entrant, placing 4th this year at 152 pounds. In 1998 Blaine was chosen "Most Improved" and in 2000 the MVP. His season record was 35-5 and Blaine is thinking about attending college after graduation next year.

Jackson County Central's 160 pounder, Nate Baker is a three-time State champion, a five time State place winner and a five-time section champ. Ending his high school career with 204 wins and only 12 losses, he joins an elite group of Minnesota wrestlers with over 200 wins. He is a two-time Christmas Tourney champ. He is Mr. Minnesota Wrestler. Nate participated in the Dream Team Classic and wrestled in the Asics Jr. Nationals, taking 3rd place. Nate's parents are Randy and Rebecca Baker and he is coached by his father. He has a 3.3 GPA. In the future he plans to "wrestle for the Gophers and help the U of M win the Division I Nationals."

Eric Pokornowski carries a 3.97 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is the son of Larry and Margaret Pokornowski. He wrestles on the Dasse-Cokato team, coached by Dean Jennissen. He was two-time All-Conference, a team captain and two-time Ironman Winner, having missed no practices. He was named Most Dedicated in 2000 and was awarded a D-C wrestling scholarship. Eric is a senior with a 35-8 season record, and placed 5th in the State Tournament. He is also All-Conference in baseball and football. Attending college and playing baseball and possibly football are in his future plans.

Scott Revier capped his senior season with a 39-2 record and a State championship. He ended his wrestling career at BOLD High School with a career tally of 103-51, wrestling for coach Richard Kelvington. He was a three-time state entrant. Scott was a member of the MN/WISC All Star Classic, participated in the National High School Championships, going 2-2. He is a member of the National Honor Society with a 3.34 GPA and has earned Eagle Scout honors. Jeff and Tami Revier are his parents. He plans to wrestle in college &endash; possibly Augsburg or NDSU.

Michael Sloneker was a two-time State entrant and a two-time section champion. He placed 3rd in the 2000 State Tournament. His season record is 18-2 and was coached by Joe Traen. He is a member of the National Honor Society, is an Academic Letter Winner and has a 3.79 GPA. Michael is All Conference in football and a band letter winner. He is the son of Mary and Dave Sloneker. Wrestling in college is the plan for this Watertown Mayer senior.

Ryan Weinandt finished his senior year with a 35-4 season record. He placed 2nd in the State Tournament at 189 pounds. This was his second time making it to State. He is coached by Ron Sanders of the Wabasha Kellogg wrestling team. He is two-time All Conference in wrestling and football. He has maintained a 3.52 GPA and is president of the National Honor Society. Ryan's parents are Mark and Sheryl Weinandt.

Three-time State entrant, Ben Anderson ended the 2000 season with a 30-3 record. His career record is 120-27. Ben wrestled for the Battle Lake-Underwood-Henning team with Kevin Anderson for his coach. He is a two-year team captain, two-time Conference Champion and won nine individual championships. He was Athlete of the Week with WDAY-TV and the Fargo Forum. Ben will be a 14 letter winner by the end of this, his senior year; four in football, five in wrestling, and five in track. Ben has earned a 3.55 GPA in the classroom and has Kevin and Linda Anderson for parents.

Travis is a junior who captured third place at State and had a 36 and 8 season. His career record is 87-35. He is coached by Neil Jennissen and wrestles on the Cambridge Isanti team which was runner up at the 2000 State Tournament. He is a two-time section champion. This National Honor Society student is the son of Steve Fuhol and Lisa Nelson. Upon graduation, Travis plans to attend college.

Goodhue High School's Brandon Lexvold, is a three-time State entrant and placed 4th this year at 130 pounds. With a year to go, as a junior, he enjoys a 114-46 career record. This season he was 33 and 8.He has maintained a 3.8 GPA and he is guided by parents, Ken and Jane Lexvold. Bill Sutter is his coach.

Jake Johnson is a junior who sports a GPA of 3.89 and is on the MWCA Academic All-State roster. He is a member of the National Honor Society. Jake is a three-time State entrant placing 4th in 2000, and so far has compiled a 128-46 varsity record. Jake is coached by Paul Vaith and represents the Hastings wrestling team.He was All-Conference twice and is a 3 sport athlete. He is cheered on by parents Tom and Cindy Johnson.

Three-time State entrant, Paul Sheldon is a Mankato West senior who placed 2nd in 1999 and 5th in 2000. He is a two-time section champion. He has a 93-27 record to his credit and a 34-6 tally on the season. He wrestles at 145 pounds, and is coached by Don Krusemark. Some of his accomplishments include, two-year All Conference, Big Nine Scholar Athlete, All-City Wrestler four years, a team captain, an Academic All-State Wrestler in 1999, an Honorable Mention Academic All State Wrestler in 2000. Mark and Karen Sheldon are his proud parents. He boasts an outstanding 3.89 GPA.
