The Guillotine 2005 Academic All-State Wrestlers

May 4, 2005

The Guillotine, now in our 34th season, has now been recognizing Academic All-State wrestlers for 27 years. The format has changed over the years including naming wrestlers by weight, classes, and teams, including honorable mention. In more recent years we have recognized 30 wrestlers as first team and all other qualifying individuals as second team. To qualify, wrestlers must send a nomination form signed by their coach and principal verifying their current GPA (minimum 3.0), wrestled a minimum of 15 varsity matches, won at least 60 percent of those matches during the current season and be a junior or senior in high school. Points are tallied according to current varsity wins, current state tournament placement and the GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers will receive two certificates, a letter of recognition and a complimentary issue of this publication.

This year's top Academic All-State wrestler spot goes to two wrestlers - Jayson Ness of Bloomington Kennedy and Evan Hacker of Canby. Both won State titles in their respective class and weight. Ness finished with an undefeated season while Hacker finished with an advantage in the GPA.

In the third position is the wrestler with the most wins on the season, Russell Smith of Owatonna who recorded a 49-0 mark and a state title. Smith and Ness were two of seven undefeated wrestlers nominated. Thirteen wrestlers scored perfect 4.0 GPA's. Kyle Bednar, Pierz, led that group followed by Brandon Klukow (Albert Lea), Billy Blumhofer (Cambridge-Isanti), Collin Pitts (Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove), Jake Johnson (Prior Lake), Greg Tamborino (Trinity-Bloomington), Ryan Tongen (Yellow Medicine East), Aaron Breyfogle (Lake City), David Hauge (Minnehaha Academy/Mpls.) Joe Swartz (Minnewaska Area), Dan Sorby (Bemidji), Dan Rysavy (Austin/Austin Pacelli) and Peter DeMarais (Trinity-Bloomington). A total of 81 wrestlers attained at least a 3.5 GPA.

Seniors hold 20 of the First Team spots and outnumbered juniors in total nominations, 84 to 46 - for a total of 130 wrestlers on the list of Academic All-State wrestlers.

The undefeated grapplers totaled seven - six of them on the First Team. The 100% win wrestlers are Ness, Smith, Chris McPhail (Pine Island), Nick Kulseth (Windom Area), Steve Larson (Apple Valley), Ryan Adams (Coon Rapids), and Nate Matousek (Glencoe-Silver Lake). Matousek has the most career wins at 243. Of the nominees, the next highest career wins are Beau Penk (Litchfield) with 193, Levi Price (Cannon Falls) with 191, and Kulseth-with 190. Penk is a junior.

Matousek and Kulseth have the distinction of being three-time State Champions and making the Academic All-State Teams. Ness and Joe Bunne (GMLOK) are two-time State Champions and are represented on our Academic All-State Teams.

We had four repeat First Team selections; Jared Schwanz (St. James), Smith (Owatonna), Ness (Bloomington Kennedy) and Zach Hansen (Albert Lea).

The breakdown of state placers nominated is as follows; first - 14, second - 19, third - 13, fourth - 10, fifth - 8, sixth - 4, state did not place - 39 and state did not qualify - 23.

Albert Lea, Apple Valley and Owatonna each placed two wrestlers on the First Team. Minnewaska Area and Totino Grace claimed the most total nominations with six each. GMLOK nominated five and four schools secured three qualifiers; Blaine, Cambridge-Isanti, Goodhue and Trinity-Bloomington.

Congratulations to all the nominees and thanks to all the coaches, administration and parents for helping The Guillotine recognize some of Minnesota's finest student-athletes.
