The Guillotine 2001 Academic All-State Wrestlers

Eastview senior Adam Fokken claims the top spot on the 2001 Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler team. Two juniors placed in the number two and three spots - Ryan Fier (Minneota) and Leland Brincefield (Wadena-Deer Creek).

Five student athletes on the top thirty team are undefeated. Ty Eustice (Blue Earth Area) has 45 wins, followed by teammate, Jeff Pfaffinger with 44 victories. Fokken tallied 38 wins, while Ryan King (Grand Meadow-LeRoy-Ostrander-Kingsland) and Tony Schlaak (New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva) each have 35 wins. Jon Wheelock (Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton) who just missed the top thirty, also had 35 wins and is an undefeated state champion. Alexandria's Evan Amundson, who is a Second Team selection, won the 160 pound Class AAA title and lost only once.

There are eleven state champions on the squad. Eustice, a four-time champ, Pfaffinger, a three-time champ and Derek Johnson (Owatonna) a two-time champ are the leaders with multiple state titles. Fokken, Leland Brincefield, Travis Fuhol (Cambridge-Isanti), King, Tyler Bullerman (Adrian), Logan Brincefield (Wadena-Deer Creek), Schlaak, Jared Evans (Blue Earth Area), Cody Geiser (New York Mills) and Tim Kraemer (Rocori) round out the field as state titlists.

This year's senior class took the high honors placing 19 in the top 30. The seniors also had more nominations - 51 of the total 83 applications that qualified.

Just like the finals of the Class AA State Dual - Blue Earth Area and St. Michael-Albertville battled for top honors on the Guillotine Academic All-State Team. Both schools had six nominations and placed three of their six qualifiers on the 30-man squad. The Blue Earth Area wrestlers scored the most overall points, placing higher at State. St. Michael-Albertville had more overall wins and a higher GPA. The two teams tied with best win percentage at 83%.

Five teams had four nominations each - GMLOK, Goodhue, Hastings, Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton and Minnewaska.

Five wrestlers are repeat winners of the Guillotine Award. They are seniors Adam Fokken, Travis Fuhol, Eustice, Derek Johnson, and Joachim Wiener (Osakis).

Wadena-Deer Creek has the rare distinction of having twins on the top-30 team. Leland and Logan Brincefield are state champions as well, and just juniors in school.

Forty-one high schools are represented. The Guillotine once again salutes the parents, coaches and administrators for your time and support in recognizing these fine student-athletes. Congratulations to all the wrestlers. YOU ARE THE BEST!

Two-time Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler, and 2001 MWCA Scholarship winner, Adam Fokken set his goal to be a state champ and achieved it, this his senior year, wrestling at 189 pounds. He's a three-time state entrant, going 2-2 as a 171 pound sophomore, then placing fourth as an 189 pound junior. Adam's varsity career record is 147-36 with an undefeated 38-0 season record for 2000-2001. Adam is the son of Mark and Lois Fokken and will be graduating from Eastview High School where Kurt Habeck is his wrestling coach. His cumulative GPA at this time is 3.87. Adam won five individual tournament championships this season and was named Outstanding Wrestler at two of those tournaments. Adam intends to attend a four year college and play football or wrestle.

Ryan Fier is a junior who captured second place at State at 160 pounds and had a 36-3 season record. His career record is 88-27. Placing second in his section, Ryan was a state entrant as a sophomore. He is a 4.0 student in the classroom and is a member of the National Honor Society. His coach is Joel Skillings and he wrestles for the Minneota Vikings wrestling team where he will be a captain next year. In his freshman year he was named Most Improved Wrestler. In his sophomore and junior years he was named Hardest Worker. In the 2000-2001 season, Ryan was named Most Valuable Teammate. He is a Legion Boys State Recipient and has been named football captain for next year. Mike and LuAnn Fier are his proud parents. Upon graduation, he is planning to go to college and major in engineering or pre-vet medicine.

State Champion Leland Brincefield has a season record of 38-1, and an impressive overall record of 129-13. He is a three-time state placewinner and has 12 career tournament championships, holding second place in the Wadena-Deer Creek high school winning percentage. He is a three-time section champ, and placed fifth in State as a freshman, 4th as a sophomore and capping his junior season with a championship at 112 pounds. A junior, Leland's GPA is 3.76. Larry and Sharon Brincefield are his parents. Looking forward to another year of wrestling is Leland's coach, Dennis Kaatz.

Travis Fuhol, a two-time Guillotine Academic Wrestler, is a senior who sports a 3.8 GPA so far this year. He is a Cambridge-Isanti senior, wrestling under the guidance of coach Neil Jennissen. Travis has a varsity career record of 119-42, wrestling all the way from 112 to 160 pounds. His 2000-2001 record is 32-1. A three-time section champ, Travis placed third in State as a junior and stood at the top of the award stand his senior year. He's a two-time All-State wrestler. He earned Academic All-Conference and has been a member of the National Honor Society three years. He is the son of Steven Fuhol and Lisa Nelson. Travis' future plans include attending a four year college and majoring in Biology and pre-optometry. He also plans to wrestle.

Four-year letterwinner Clarke Athman has a season record of 32-5 and a varsity career record of 104-22. A two-time state entrant, Clarke place fifth his junior year and second his senior year, losing in the finals to Marcus Levesseur of Bloomington Kennedy. In soccer, Clarke is a four-time letterwinner and was named MVP his senior year and made the All-City Team the last three years. His wrestling coach is Tim Bengston and his parents are Clyde and Carol Athman. Clarke was named Most Valuable Wrestler of his team both his junior and senior years and is a two-time All-Conference Wrestler. He has a 4.0 GPA. He has competed in piano performance at the state level the last three years, taking lessons since age six. He enjoys wrestling, soccer, music and weight lifting. He plans to participate in wrestling at the collegiate level in Division II or division III.

Two-time Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler, two-time MWCA Academic All-State team member, five-time SCC Champion, 2001 SCC Offensive Wrestler of the Year, and Four-time State Champion, Ty Eustice is a senior wrestler for the Blue Earth Area Bucs. With a 191-11 varsity careeer record, Ty has wrestled all the way from 103 - 152 pounds. His proud parents are Jack and Mona Eustice and he is coached by his father Jack. Ty plans to wrestle for the University of Iowa with a goal of becoming a NCAA Champion. He will be majoring in Business.

State Champion, Ryan King is a junior wrestling for the Grand Meadow/LeRoy Ostrander Kingsland wrestling team. He claims an undefeated season record with 35 wins. His overall varsity career record is an outstanding 114 - 28. He is a two-time Section Champ, placing second in State in 2000 and first this year. Guiding Ryan are his parents Mike and Kari King, and his wrestling coach, Bill Simpkins. Ryan is a member of the National Honor Society, FFA and Student Council. He is a two-time team captain and four-time All Conference. He is also All Conference in football and baseball. Ryan has a 3.72 GPA.

Derek and SueAnn Johnson can be proud of their son, Derek who is a two-time Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler, and two-time MWCA All-State Academic team member. He sports a 3.90 GPA. He is a four-time Seciton Champ and a two-time State Champ. His freshman year he placed sixth in the State Tournament, his sophomore and junior years, he won the championship medal and his senior year he took third place. His varsity career record is168-12, wrestling for coach, Scot Davis. His senior year he earned 45 wins and two losses. Derek "DJ" plans to attend either Northwestern or Wisconsin on a wrestling scholarship, majoring in Business.

T.J. Anderson wrestles for Dassel Cokato. He is a four-time section champ and placed third at State this year as a senior. He was a four-time conference champ, MWCA first team All-Academic, Guillotine Academic All-State Honorable Mention in 2000, was a two-year captain and holds twenty-two school records! T.J. claims a 44-1 season record and a 165-32 career record, wrestling for coach Dean Jennissen. He has a GPA of 3.87 and plans to attend a four year school to wrestle. He is interested in graphic design or education. Proud parents are Bob and Ruth Anderson.

160 pound state runner-up, Travis Birhanzl is a senior who wrestled for the Montevideo wrestling team and head wrestling coach, Jeff Gallagher. He was a conference champ his sophomore and senior years. He has a 29-4 season record and a varsity career record of 125-41. He was named All-Conference two times. He is a senior class officer and was elected homecoming king. With a 3.88 GPA, Travis has been a member of the National Honor Society for three years. Travis plans to go on to college and wrestle, majoring in math and secondary education. Gregg and Mary Birhanzl are his parents.

Jason Rhoten is the son of Charles and Deb Rhoten. He has a GPA of 3.83 and a class rank of 24 out of 108. He is a two-time section champ (1999 and 2000). He is a three-time state entrant, placing third at State this March at 130 pounds. Jason will be a two-time captain for the Komet wrestling team.With a varsity career record of 121-23, and a season record of 43-3, coach Chris Litecky is excited to have him back again next year and comments, "Everything he does is geared to improving himself as a student, athlete and human being. Jason is an excellent example of a champion. He is an excellent example of how wrestling positively affects people.

Osakis senior, Joachim Wiener, is two-time state placewinner, taking a second place in 2000 and third place in 2001, and a three-time section champ. He had a 36-6 season and a varsity career record of 155-45. He's been named Team Most Valuable Wrestler two times, and won the OHS Pin Award twice. He is a 2001 team captain and holds nine school records, and is a five-time conference champion. With a 3.9 GPA, Joachim was on the MWCA All-State Academic Honor Roll. He is the son of Al and Anne Wiener. Joachim plans to attend college, study engineering and wrestle.

Two-time section champ, two-time All-Conference, two-time team MVP and two-time team captain, Jay Fogelson has a 34-3 season record and an 87-44 career record. He placed fifth at State in 2000, and was runner-up in 2001 at 171 pounds. In football, Jay was two-time All-Conference, voted Team Defensive MVP and set a new Byron tackling record for the season and was a team captain. Jay has a 3.82 GPA and is a two-year member of the National Honor Society. His parents are Randy and Tammy Fogelson and his coach is Derrick Hintz. Jay will attend Winona State to play football next year and will be majoring in either business or construction management.

State Champion Tyler Bullerman has a season record of 37-4 and a varsity career record of 105-42. He is a four-time section placer and section champ in 2001. A senior he wrestled at 171 pounds for the Adrian wrestling team and coach, Gregg Nelson. The son of Tom and Trish Bullerman, Tyler is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, and the Lettermen's Club. He has a GPA of 3.57 and has been on the "A" Honor Roll throughout high school.His future plans are to attend a four year college, yet-to-be decided, and study veterinary medicine.

State Champion, Logan Brincefield, Wadena-Deer Creek wrestler is a three time state placewinner. In 2000 he was injured all seson and needed both shoulders repaired. He has a near perfect 27-1 season record and a 98-36 varsity career record. He has seven individual tournment championships. He was a three-time section champ and wrestled 103, 112 and 119 so far in his high school wrestling career. Logan's GPA is 3.66 and he is the son of Larry and Sharon Brincefield. A junior, his coach Dennis Kaatz is lucky to have Logan around for another year of wrestling. After graduation Logan plans to attend college and continue wrestling.

Tony Schlaak, a two-time State placewinner won the gold this, his senior year. Last year he placed third at State. With a 91-44 career record, Tony had an undefeated season with 35 wins. Awards Tony has received in wrestling are: two-time All-State, five-time Academic All-Conference, two-time All Conference, two-time All-Area Wrestler, Team MVP as a senior and 2001 Area Wrestler of the Year. Tony carries a 3.56 GPA and this is his second year as a member of the National Honor Society. Cheering for Tony are his parents, Neil and Jill Schlaak and coach Paul Cyr.Tony plans on getting a four year degree in Business.

Dustin Benz is the son of Dennis and Sheryl Benz and is a two-time State placewinner, capturing sixth as a junior and third this year at 189 pounds. Dustin was a two-time team captain, voted Male Athlete of the Year, as a junior, MVP of the Hibbing Duals and Superior Classic. Roger Nelson was his wrestling coach. Dustin was also captain of his football and baseball teams. He has been involved in Student Council, Choir, Peer Listening and Tutoring, D.A.R.E., and is a member of the National Honor Society. He has 3.77 GPA. Dustin compiled a 128-43 career record and a 37-2 season record. Dustin plans to attend NDSU where he will pursue accounting and wrestle for the Bison.

Wrestling for coach, Randy Zimmer and the Milaca/Faith Christian wrestling team, Adam Johnson has racked up a 164-55 career record. He was team captain this year. His season record was 35-6. He was a four-time section placewinner and a two-time State placewinner, runner-up in 1999 and third in 2001, wrestling at 152 pounds. Adam is a two-time Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler and a 2000 MWCA Academic team member. In 2000 he was named MVP for his team and was a MN/Wisconsin Classic Wrestler. Adam has a 3.78 GPA and is the son of Dick and Cindy Johnson. His future plans include attending college, going into elementary education and coaching.

Milaca/Faith Christian, 12th

State Champion at 103 pounds, Jared Evans placed fourth at the Christmas Tournament in 2000 and seventh in 1999. He was a Cadet National All-American and a member of the MN National Dual team in 2000. He has a varsity career record of 80-16 and a season 42-4 record. A junior, Jared wrestles for the Blue Area wrestling team and Jack Eustice is his coach. His GPA is a 3.4 and he is an MWCA Academic Team member for 2001. Duane and Mary Evans are Jared's parents. He plans to continue to wrestle when he goes to college and major in education and coaching.

With a 3.99 GPA, senior, Cody Geiser, of New York Mills is a member of the National Honor Society. He is a three sport captain (football, wrestling and baseball). He is an Excel Award Recipient and is ranked first in his class academically. Cody was named All-Section in baseball. His season record in wrestling is 32-8 and his varsity career record is 130-67. His parents are Donna and Terry Geiser and his wrestling coach is Eric Niemi. He plans to attend college at NDSU.

Rocori High School's first ever state champ is Tim Kraemer, senior 189 pounder. He was a three-time section champ, three-time All-Conference, Greco All-American and World Team member. He had a 38 and three season record and a varsity careeer record of 123-47. Paul Court coached this talented wrestler. Tim sports a 3.37 GPA and plans to attend college (so far undecided). Blue Earth Area junior, Jeff Pfaffinger is a three-time Section champ and three-time State champion. He is a 2001 MWCA Academic All-State Award recipient, a four-time Conference champion and a Minnesota State freestyle Champion in 2000. Jeff had a perfect 44-0 season and has an overall 142-17 varsity record. Denise and Dave Pfaffinger are his parents. He is coached by his father and Jack Eustice.

Mike Jensen completed this year with a 34-3 record. His career record is 123-52. He has wrestled on varsity since seventh grade, lettering his 8th-12 grades. He is a four-time All-Conference wrestler. In ninth grade he was a member of the state entrant team. He was a three-time state entrant placing fifth in 2000 and third in 2001. A team captain his senior year, Mike was named Most Valuable and Outstanding Wrestler, and All-Conference. At the Greg Schwartz Wrestling Camp he was named MVP and takedown champ. He's been a Student Council member throughout H.S. and has a 3.66 GPA. He lettered in track and football. In Mike's corner are coach Tom Beyer and parents Dave and Sue Jensen.His plans are to attend Ridgewater College in Willmar.

Jacob Barthel, state runner-up at hevyweight was also a qualifier for the state tournamnent in 2000, placing fourth. He was a two-time section champ and two-time All Conference. His career record is 90-30 and his season record is 38-3 and was a member of the St. Michael Albertville Class AA State runner-up team, coached by Gregg Greeno. The student athlete is a three year member of the National Honor Society and has a GPA of 3.52, this, his senior year.He was named 1st team MWCA All Sate Academic. His parents are John and Barb Barthel. He also participated in football and was named Wright County Conference MVP Lineman. Jacob plans to attend a four year college, play football, and possibly wrestle.

Three-time state entrant, Jacob Zamzow, son of Steve and Jeanne Zamzow, wrestles for the Dover-Eyota team, coached by Mike Mazzitelli and Dan Priebe. A junior, Jacob placed second in 2001 at State at 152 pounds (losing to Matt Nagel in the finals). He has twice been selected to the K-M All Tournament team, is a three-time All-Conference wrestler, a three time P.I. Tournament champion, a two-time Stewartville Tournament champion and a section champion this year. His varsity record so far is 93-33 and this season's record was 26-4. Jacob was also named All-Conference in baseball and Honorable Mention in football, being Dover-Eyota's leading ground gainer. He has a 3.56 GPA. Upon graduation, Jacob plans to attend college.

Gary Auer, a senior, wrestled for the Holdingford High School wrestling team and Gary Auer. He is a three-time state entrant, placing fourth in 2001 at 171 pounds. His varsity season record is 34-3. He's a two time section champion. He was named All-Conferene and Academic All-Conference. Gary also participated in football where he was named two-time All-State, two-time All-Section, two-time All-Conference. He has a 3.73 GPA, is a AA Award Winner and an Excel Award Winner. His parents are David and Rita Auer and his wrestling coach is Alan Walz. Gary plans to attend St. John's University and become a history teacher and football and wrestling coach.

Shane Tappe, son of Willy and Robin Tappe, is a three sport athlete (football, baseball, and wrestling). He placed twice at the state wrestling tournament - sixth as a freshman and second as a junior at 140 pounds, wrestling for coach Rob Ulloytt. He has already wrestled five years on the varsity, and as a junior has a year to go. Shane placed eighth at the 2000 National Coaches Association Tournament and has earned some school records in wrestling, namely 132 wins, 335 takedowns and 61 pins. With a 3.40 GPA, Shane is two-year member of the National Honor Society. His future plans include attending college and pursuing a degree in athletic training or veterinary science. He's thinking about competing in baseball and/or wrestling while in college.

Randy Dehmer is a three-year National Honor Society member, named first team MWCA All-State Academic and is the recipient of a MWCA Academic Scholarship. Last year Randy was a Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler Honorable Mention. His GPA is 4.0. This senior St. Michael-Albertville wrestler was on the 2001 State runner-up team. His varsity career record is 86-32. His season record was 43-5. He's a two-time All-Conference and two-time section champ. In 2000 he placed sixth at State. He's a three sport athlete, participationg in football, wrestling and baseball. Tom and Judy Dehmer are his parents and Gregg Greeno was his wrestling coach. His future plans are to attend college at UMD and study accounting.

With an outstanding 113-26 varsity career record and a 43-6 season record, senior Nathan Lefebvre wrestled on the St. Michael Albertville team and for coach Gregg Greeno. Wrestling at 125 pounds, he placed fifth at State this season. He was a two-time section champ and a four-time All-Conference wrestler. Nathan has earned a 3.67 GPA this year and is a three-year member of the National Honor Society and a two-time Guillotine Academic All-State nominee earning Honorable Mention his junior year. He is a three-sport athlete, participating in football, wrestling and baseball. Nathan's parents are Dan and Karen Lefebvre. He plans to attend a four-year college and wrestle.

David Whipps, two-time section champ and three-time All Conference, is the son of Roger and Lori Whipps. David is a four-time letterwinner, wrestling on the Scott West team, which placed fourth at the 2000 State Tournament. He is coached by Darren Ripley. Wrestling at 135 pounds, David took sixth place this spring at the state tournament. David boasts a 3.92 GPA this year, and is a two-time National Honor Society member. He is in the top 15% of his junior class. David has a 110-34 career record on the varsity and earned a 35-4 season record.His future plans include attending a four-year school with hopes of wrestling in college and going on to medical school and becoming an anesthesilogist.
