Spiess named head wrestling coach at MN State-Moorhead

July 28, 2003

A member of the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling family for nearly a decade, Keenan Spiess (SPEESE) has been named the head wrestling coach at MSUM. The announcement was made today by Dr. David Crockett, interim athletic director at MSU Moorhead.

Spiess, 31, replaces John Sterner, who retired last year after 15 seasons as head coach of the Dragons.

A four-year wrestling letterwinner and captain-elect of the Dragons as a senior, Spiess previously served as an assistant under Sterner. Spiess returned to the Dragon wrestling staff last year after four seasons as head coach at Fargo North High School.

During Spiess' tenure as head coach of the Spartans, Fargo North crowned three North Dakota State Class A individual champions. He was named the East Region Coach of the Year in 1999-2000.

A native of Fargo, ND, Spiess was named an NAIA honorable mention All-American as a sophomore and junior, and qualified for the national tournament again as a senior. A transfer from North Dakota State University and a tri-captain of the 1994-95 Dragons, Spiess claimed the NSIC 167-pound crown in 1995.

A two-time Spartan MVP, Spiess was a North Dakota State Class A individual runnerup at Fargo North.
